Wilkie Collins - The New Magdalen, Volume I, Bernhard Tauchnitz, 1873

The story begins during the Franco-German war of 1870, where Mercy Merrick, a woman with a troubled past who is working as a volunteer nurse in a French cottage hospital, meets a respectable young Englishwoman named Grace Roseberry. Grace is on her way to England with a letter of introduction to her wealthy relative by marriage, Lady Janet Roy, in hopes of becoming her companion.  When Grace is seemingly killed by a German shell, Mercy seizes the opportunity to escape her past as a convict and assumed prostitute by taking Grace's identity and her introductory letter. Mercy travels to England, is warmly welcomed by Lady Janet as her companion, and soon becomes engaged to Horace Holmcroft, an acquaintance of Lady Janet.
