Simon Finch - Slave Island, Souvenir Press, 1984
Set in the 18th century, the story begins in Boston with Billy Peake, a young English colonial. Billy and his brother Andrew invest their inheritance in a cargo of Mexican silver to ship to China. When Billy discovers that the transit vessel is actually a slave ship, he uncovers a web of greed and sadism. He is eventually abandoned on Africa’s Slave Coast, forced across the continent, and swept into a journey spanning the Ottoman Empire and revolutionary China.
