Born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in the mid-19th century to a Spanish mother and a Scottish father, the protagonist, Santa Fe Cameron (or "Fey"), is orphaned at a young age. A Navajo shaman recognizes her inherited psychic abilities (or "second sight," a Scottish term) and gives her a turquoise amulet, which becomes a symbol for her spirit and destiny.
